John James Minster has been in the horror game for a long time and it shows with his 2022 horror novel The Undertaker’s Daughter. This is one helluva book. It is a rollercoaster ride of thrills and chills.
Although it takes a while to get going horror-wise, once things get scary, the sequences are consistent. The characterization is also very well-written especially that of the titular character. I also learned a lot about what an undertaker does and that knowledge was quite new to me.
The novel also does well to balance fictional reality with the supernatural. The finest aspect is undoubtedly the pacing. From start to finish, I didn’t notice the time pass by. It is an extremely fast-paced page-turner.
There are also twists in almost every chapter. No one passage reads the same and I admired Minster’s writing style.
However, there is one thing I didn’t like about The Undertaker’s Daughter, and that is the level of sexual innuendoes present throughout the narrative. One or two of these are okay but I felt the story was littered with them.
Overall, The Undertaker’s Daughter is the epitome of supernatural horror. It’s unputdownable and the twist ending left me reeling for more.
